Dear Fly Fisher,
It looks like another
year has almost gone. How many secret fishing spots have you
banked in the back of your mind? How many big ones did not
get away? What are your plans for next year?
Just like you, the
SouthWest Council is starting to think about next year.
After many years of dormancy, ideas are popping out from the
clubs like a blue-winged olive hatch on a cloudy day. We
will be representing the clubs, with their help, at no less
than four fishing shows. More if we can find them. The first
shared booth at the Marriott's Show went very well and we
are looking forward to moving forward with the agenda of the
clubs and the SWC.
We will be having our
first fundraiser in quite a few years. Mark your calendars
for February 20 at the Long Beach Casting Club clubhouse so
you can attend an event featuring fly tiers, casting lessons
and our first ever Garage Sale of Gear.
After eight months in
office, I hope I am assisting to provide a better menu of
answers for the question, "What does the SouthWest
Council do for me?" In general terms, we provide the
nervous system of the clubs of Southern California and
Nevada. If a club needs assistance, we can help provide
solutions or help to network and spread the word to the
other participating SWC clubs. Want a casting program? We
can send you Certified Casters. Need a better fly tying
event? We have the experts. A special speaker? We can help
find one that suits your bill. I guess what I am trying to
say is that we can help augment what a club is already
doing.
Not a member of one of
our 20+ clubs? You are missing the use of the right fly at
the right time. Even if you do not attend one of their
monthly meetings, being a member keeps you better informed
through club newsletters and e-mail blasts. Water and other
political issues affect all of us in this state and being
part of a larger group makes your voice travel further.
Casting, tying, knots they also make up so much of what we
do. Why not attend a club meeting near you and further those
fly fishing skills.
Finally, at the bottom
of this page, you will find a Paypal link. The SouthWest
Council spends money to put on these events, attend the
shows and send casters and tiers to all of the clubs. We
want to continue to provide the assistance to clubs and
members and add more programs each year. We do not have
monthly meetings with raffles. Your dues go to support the
National office in their efforts to support the 15 national
councils and none of that money comes back to us. If you
believe in your sport and the value of the SouthWest
Council, I urge you to click on that link and send us
something. There are almost 700 supporters in the SWC and if
each of you sent us $5.00, we would be set for most of our
programs. You do not have to have a Paypal account to donate
through Paypal as they accept all major credit cards.
However if you prefer using a check, please mail to the
address listed below. For tax purposes we are a 501 (c)
3 non-profit organization and that makes any donation
tax-deductible!
I understand that
these are not the best economic times and if that amount is
too much, at least we know we have your support by remaining
a FFF member.
Tight Lines,
