President's Message

Michael Schweit

So much has happened since my last message that it is hard to know where to start but, I will throw out the teasers and then elaborate. At the top, a new club has joined the Southwest Council!  And, we have committed to a fly fishing fair in Mammoth in September, 2012. A new retailer has joined our ranks and we had the Second Annual Fly Fishing Tournament on the Kern.  In short, we continue to grow and expand.

Santa Lucia Fly Fishers from San Luis Obispo is our newest addition. Their club has been around since 1955 and was part of the Northern California Council. They have worked and fished with some of our local clubs like Santa Barbara and Southern Sierra and simply wanted to be closer to those whose company they enjoy. We welcome them to our fly fishing family.

Our “Evening with Joan Wulff” had to be cancelled due to illness. As of press time, she is feeling much better and we hope to re-schedule for sometime in the spring. Watch for details.

I think the first question I was ever asked (which continues today) was, “when will the Council do some kind of a fly fishing fair?” With two and a half years under our collective belts, the Council has committed to a four day fair in Mammoth, September 13-16, 2012. It will be called The Fly Fishing Faire and with the help of the clubs, we hope this event will introduce more people to our sport and drive even more toward a club near them. We will be offering workshops on casting, tying and on-stream techniques. We also want to have non-fishing workshops like photography and Dutch oven cooking along with golf, spa and tour packages to make this of interest to a wider spectrum of people. More details will be coming and we want to hear any ideas that you might have.  With all of our participation, this could be the biggest fly fishing event California has ever seen!!

Guy Jeans has joined the retailer side of the Federation. In addition to being a Certified Casting instructor, licensed guide, poker maven, husband and father, his shop, Kern River Fly Fishers, joins the other fly fishing retail shops in the nation. Please support his shop whenever you are near the Kern.

Southern Sierra once again hosted the Intra-Club Fly Fishing Tournament and it was a rousing success. Please see Marshall Bissett’s article on the event and tournament results. If your club did not field a team in 2011, start your training now for next year and join your other SWC clubs at the Kern
